JAHNSTRASSE ATTIC EXTENSION

ATTIC EXTENSION, BERLIN, Since 2019

A new building and a vertical rooftop extension with a total of 70 apartments. The buildings are 70 metres long. Purely statistically this breaks down an apartment per metre. I spent my youth in the suburbs of a small town. In these kinds of surroundings an apartment per plot of land is an equation that approximates very closely to reality.
That means 70 sites for the equivalent number of apartments. Because every suburban-dweller wanted his or her own property with a private garden, the suburbs became very large. At university experts could tell you that this phenomenon was called “urban sprawl”. My family and my friends back home tended to be puzzled by this label. I can understand their desire for their own house and their own garden. Above all I can understand that fulfilling this wish represents a real challenge to us as architects. But differently.

The alignment of the existing building screens the courtyard off from the street front. The roof storey of this building is extended vertically.
