AMANO HOME

INTERIOR DESIGN, APARTMENT HOTEL, COMPETITON 1st PRIZE, BERLIN, 2016
WITH SWANTJE GRASMANN

Principally, hotels are always boring, always annoying. Either no one made an effort – or someone made too much of an effort, which people then call design hotel. In the latter case, everything seems a bit over-ambitious and in the end you get rooms yelling at their guests: ‘Fancy taste, you nut!’ Actually a downright piece of insolence, as a good hotel should allow itself the luxury of hoping its guests chose the hotel, precisely because they already had a good taste. This hotel seems reconciled with its guest – the strictness appears more casual, things do have their places, but no detail is to be more than what it is – precisely a detail that is there simply to ensure the guest is well for the duration of one night. Should this be called service to the room, service to the guest? Whatever – it should be called hotel room. Because that’s what it is in the best case.
